Punctuation = Personal PR

Recently, I came across a study done by GMX, a free email service, that states more than half of adults in the U.S. judge other people’s intelligence based on email content and format. Of the 1002 people surveyed, more than 50 percent said they base their opinion of someone’s intelligence on their writing style, tone and the language used in the email. The results of the survey also suggest age and authority were two other characteristics most oft… Continue

A Case Made for Small Firms

We just recently wrote an abstract of what will become a white paper concerning the advantages of working with a small firm over a larger one. As we went through the research and editing process it was interesting to see how many benefits there are to clients in choosing a smaller firm, or an individual, to meet communications needs.

We are looking forward to marketing this abstract and eventual white paper, if only to see the responses. In the meantime, do you have any insight to share on this… Continue

The Grasshopper Rule

I was at a client's site earlier this week and someone there told me a story that kinda stuck with me, for many reasons.

It's like this: I'm eating lunch (organic soup) when we started talking about organic produce. He said to me that as a farmer, he would never eat organic food. Of course, I asked why since I've completely bought this whole "organic is better for you" line lock stock and barrel ... and he explained how the lack of pesticides and chemicals increases the amount of nasties that a… Continue

FAQs From Last Week's Visit to UF

Last week, I visited with the PR students at UF. It was a blast, they were so prepared and asked such great questions I wanted to share some here.

I was most frequently asked about cover letters. My opinion is that yes, you should have a cover letter, and it should be addressed to someone specific. If there's a posting for a position and it doesn't have a contact--work your network to find one. This is the age of Facebook and LinkedIn! You can find a personal contact anywhere.

I reviewe… Continue

Tell us about you...
I am a communications consultant headquartered in Chicago, Ill., specializing in global business-to-business communications strategy and execution within the manufacturing, packaging, plastics & chemical, automotive & heavy equipment, technology and professional service industries. In late 2005, after four years of individual consulting I founded Pietryla Enterprises, Inc., a specialty marketing communications firm that provides nimble as well as turnkey communications support to its clients.

Prior to this position, I worked at Grant Jacoby advertising and public relations where I lead business-to-business public relations efforts on behalf of a 3M-subsidiary, Dyneon Fluoropolymers; Rexam Beverage Can Americas; and Hyster Company as well as provided vital support to the International Truck and Engine Corporation account and the agency’s new business team.

Prior to joining Grant Jacoby, I worked at Gibbs & Soell Public Relations, where I was acting global manager of marketing communications for Dow Performance Foams and an agency representative for both the Dow Performance Foams and Engineered Films and Laminates’ public relations programs.

I have a bachelor’s degree in public relations, with an emphasis on business administration, from the University of Florida, Gainesville.
